For DeepRising I worked on a couple of pre viz shots and the shot seen here which appears in the film. This shot required the addition of several elements including the tentacle of the monster, several layers of bubbles, a tinting of the water to simulate blood, a stronger more intense area of blood as the victim is pulled down the flooded hallway, the explosion and finally the creation of the hallway as the light interacts with it. Applications used were Photoshop and After Effects to create the light on the walls and floor from the explosion, AfterEffects for all the particles (bubbles and blood). Electric Image was used for the tentacle and to build parts of the hallway that just did not exist such as the pipes and walls.
The shot begins with the victim's struggle to activate a grenade. A plate of practical bubbles was provided. The foreground and all others are cg.
As he is pulled down the hall the bubbles trail along and a trail of blood stained water is left behind. Nearing the end of the hallway the victim is barely visible.
An explosion is comped in to simulate the grenade going off. The light from the explosion reveals the surrounding structure.
More of the hallway is seen as the explosion brightens, foreground elements cast shadows.
The brightness of the explosion decreases as does the interactive light on the floor and walls.
