In May of 1998 I was contracted by BFTR to do the opening animation sequence for the MTV Movie awards. The project had 2 main parts: about 30 seconds of 3d animation and a 2d motion graphics section showing reflections in the pilot's helmet. All of the 3D elements were created and animated in StrataStudio Pro; all the 2D art - texture maps and background gradients were created in Photoshop. Then it was all put together using Adobe After Effects.

In this sequence we see the pilot of a space craft with reflections of his ship's displays visible in his visor as well as the sea of liquid metallic blobs he is traveling through.

In this second sequence we see the awards show logo reflecting in the visor as the ship's view screen doors close and the pilot removes his helmet.

Initially the viewer is thrust into a sea of metallic blobs undulating and merging all around.
Rapidly you approach a metallic egg with rotating sections and visible lights on either end. On the approach to the egg it rotates and begins to open.
The egg opens revealing an energy within. As the viewer pulls back the center sections of the egg wipe to reveal the awards show logo. The final awards show logo.

The movie awards shows are produced by 10th Planet Productions. Banned from the Ranch Entertaiment BFTR did all the effects shots for the 98 awards show. Visit their site for a complete breakdown of the work created. Most of the ship's display graphics that are seen reflecting in the pilot's visor were also created by BFTR. My job was to integrate them into the shots seen here. BFTR is well know for its on screen graphics.
